LAPLACE — Students were inspired by the Mardi Gras Indians and created their own one-of-a-kind headpieces this week at the Reserve library.

Rona Joseph, branch supervisor, gave a brief presentation about the history of the Mardi Gras Indians and what influence they have on the culture of Mardi Gras. The headpieces were then crafted, using beads, embellishments, feathers and boas.

“It’s always great when the children of the community can learn something interesting and have fun creatively,” Joseph said.

At the Central library in LaPlace, tweens and teens recently prepared for Valentine’s Day by making interactive glow-in-the-dark cards for the special people in their lives.

Carly Maurin, the creative brain behind the program, instructed the children on how to create the cards.

“It was definitely tough getting the circuits to work, but we managed to get every child’s card to light up,” Maurin said. “This was definitely one of the biggest crowds I’ve interacted with and everyone enjoyed the originality of their card.”
