RESERVE — Since it had been five years since Riverside and St. Charles Catholic played each other in basketball, no current Comets player had ever faced the Rebels on the court.

Thursday night was a rough introduction.

Except for a brief flurry in the game’s opening minutes when St. Charles hit a couple of 3-pointers and Riverside didn’t, the Rebels controlled all aspects of Thursday night’s River Parishes showdown on the way to a 90-46 victory.

Herb McGee led all scorers with 23 points. Malik Crowfield scored 19, Kash Foley followed with 18 and Jared Butler scored 17.

The Rebels hit 14 3-point goals. Crowfield led with five. It was the Rebels’ 12th win in a row on the court after losing their first three games of the season. The team also was awarded a forfeit from Landry-Walker.

St. Charles (9-8) got 17 points from Jobe Kelly and 13 from Jordan Arceneaux.

No other Comets player reached double figures.

However, it was Kelly who gave the visitors’ fans a little to cheer about when he opened the game with a pair of 3-pointers to give St. Charles a short-lived lead.

His third, with 3:14 remaining in the first quarter, put the Comets ahead 13-8. His short jumper just before the buzzer pulled the Comets to a 17-17 tie at the end of the first quarter and another gave St. Charles a 19-17 lead in the first minute of the second quarter.

But it didn’t take Riverside long to regain control. McGee’s 3-pointer with 7:09 to play in the half put the Rebels ahead 20-19. They would never trail again. Riverside outscored the Comets 22-6 in the second quarter to take a 39-23 lead.

“We tried hard. We were overmatched,” St. Charles coach Kemper Todd said.

“We’re not in it to play for a little while. They forced us to play at their pace, to play their game, and that’s frustrating. But that’s where we are. We’re learning how to play at that level and that’s part of the journey. That is positive. You’ve got to take your beatings to learn how to play there.  It shows where we have to be.”

East St. John

East St. John notched a big District 7-5A win on Tuesday, taking a 63-54 victory over Destrehan. Troy Green led the team with 17 points. Ja’von Antonio scored 14 and Allen Williams scored 12.

Coach Yussef Jasmine said it was a big win for his team, which improved to 10-9 overall and 2-1.

“It was a typical East St. John-Destrehan game,” Jasmine said. “There was a lot of intensity. I thought we came out with a little more to start the game and we took control of the game pretty early. Our confidence is in a good place right now. ”

While Green led the scoring despite being heavily guard all night, Jasmine said he was proud of his younger players — Antonio and Williams are both sophomores — for stepping up.

“They played really well,” Jasmine said.

“When I put them out there on the court, I have 100 percent confidence in them. My expectations for them are just as high as for any other player. They’re not sophomores to me. They’re sophomores to other people. We knew Troy was going to be double-teamed. If I was playing us, I’d double-team him too. “

West St. John

West St. John broke its seven-game losing streak Thursday night with a 68-39 non-district victory over South Plaquemines.

The Rams (2-10) were led by Amere Oubre’s 23 points. Trevon Borne scored 21.
