Last year, the East St. John Lady Wildcats struggled in their traditional District 7-5A, finishing with a pair of wins. This year’s team already has surpassed that mark.

On Friday, East St. John used an early second-half flurry to take a 53-44 victory over Thibodaux to improve to 3-0 in District play and 11-6 overall.

Selena James led the scoring with 12 points and Meah Monroe finished with 11. Nakendria Wilson and Briana Thompson both finished with nine.

For the other three St. John the Baptist Parish teams, it’s a whole new ballgame as redistricting has shuffled them into the same league.

RIVERSIDE/SCC

Last year Riverside went 5-1 in  2A district against St. James, St. Mary’s and Sci Academy.

St. Charles battled to 9-5 record in a huge 3A district against the likes of Curtis and Lusher. West St. John cruised through a 1A district to finish 9-0. The key game takes place Thursday when Riverside hosts St. Charles in the first of two showdowns.

The St. Charles Catholic Lady Comets used Friday night as a final tuneup. The Comets lost to Class 5A opponent St. Amant, 54-44 to drop to 11-3 on the season.

Lela Hill once again led the scoring with 20 points and was the only player to reach double figures.

Riverside Academy lost to Class 5A opponent Slidell, 65-42, on Saturday to drop to 11-6. The Lady Rebels also opened district play this week.

West St. John

West St. John coach Lester Smith knew the competition would be tough at the annual Sugar Bowl Prep basketball tournament. After beating Woodlawn 60-6 in the first round, the Lady Rams dropped successive games to Covington (56-39) and Chapelle (45-35).

Maya Trench scored 15 points against Cov-ington and 18 against Chapelle. Jaquana Hunter scored 18 points against Covington and 14 against Chapelle.

West St. John is 10-7 heading into its Friday night District 12-2A opener at St. Mary’s.
