Residents urged to prepare for freezing temperatures

LAPLACE — The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for Southeastern Louisiana including St. John the Baptist Parish from midnight until 8 a.m. Monday.
Forecasters predict temperatures to fall into the lower 30s to 20s and impact St. John Parish for several hours.
Residents are advised to take freeze preparedness measures at home and work in advance of cooler temperatures. Preparations include wrapping and protecting exposed pipes, protecting sensitive plants and crops and safely sheltering outdoor pets and farm animals. Proper use of heating equipment is advised to avoid fires.

Protective Tips:
Pets and plants should be brought inside; cover outside plants
Other animals or livestock should be sheltered in areas with non-frozen drinking water
Insulate outdoor faucets with faucet covers, rags, paper or trash bags, or plastic foam
Space heaters should be 36 inches from anything flammable and turned off when not in use
Maintain proper ventilation for all fuel-burning devices
Keep flashlights, extra food and water and other safety items readily available
Maintain contact with the elderly and those considered at risk
Dress warmly and keep exposed skin covered if outdoors
