Michel: Children’s excitement captures joy of being grateful

It arrived a few days after Christmas, and I was glad that my granddaughters, Adeline and Olivia, were with me when I opened the large box.
Inside were several gifts, including one for each little girl.
They sat on the floor and quickly unwrapped their presents.
“Cookies! Cookies!” Adeline and Olivia repeated over and over.
They each held up a wooden set of cookies and toppings, which would soon be added to their little kitchens.
“Don’t they already have a set of these?” I asked their mothers.
“Olivia does and she loves it,” said Monique.
“This is Adeline’s third set,” said Lauren, “and it’s her favorite thing in her kitchen.”
“They’re acting like they’ve never seen these before. I love that they’re so appreciative of the gifts,” I said, while I silently hoped that they never lose this childlike excitement over gifts thoughtfully chosen for them.
And I pray the same for us.
I hope we never take God’s gifts for granted. May His daily gifts of life, faith and grace spur gratitude that only grows.
Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Mark 10:15)
May we remain as excited and grateful as little children to receive all of God’s gifts, especially the gift of eternal life.
