Keller: Planting seed of change is easy part

As I was about to enter the Reserve Post Office Tuesday, a pleasant lady was leaving.

I held the door open for her and said, “Happy New Year!”

“Happy New Year to you, too, Mr. Keller!”

She then asked if I remembered her. “Help me out,” I said.

“I’m Dale Robinson’s mother! I’ll never forget what you did for him.”

I recalled that over 25 years ago, Dale had a drug problem while working in one of the local industries.

His mother called and after meeting with the family, I suggested that he go to Teen Challenge, a 12-month Christian program in Hot Springs, Ark.

He completed the program, but after a short period of being drug-free, he decided to go back to using drugs.

“How is Dale now?” I asked.

“Mr. Keller, he’s doing great and is in charge of a Christian church program in Lake Charles.”

She gave me his phone number and I called him.

Dale was as excited to hear from me and I was to talk to him.

He shared that when he left this area, he worked at a mission in Baton Rouge for a few years.

He’s been in Lake Charles for the past 11 years. He is married and has four children.

He’s now the children’s church pastor at the Living Word Christian Church, which is a nondenominational church with approximately 800 members.

With his wife, Leah’s support, he has earned a Masters in pastoral ministries.

I reminded Dale that he is a miracle.

“I know that, Mr. Keller, and I’ll never forget what God did for me.”

After our conversation, I thought about his mother thanking me for what I did for him.

The only thing I did was plant a seed. The mission and others in Baton Rouge watered the seed, but it was God who gave the increase and completed the miracle.

Meeting Mrs. Robinson and speaking to Dale was an encouragement for me to keep planting the seed, realizing that this is the easiest part of the process.
