Letter: Courtesy, new library leader sought

I have the utmost respect for those on the Library Board who have the responsibility of making difficult decisions and ensuring that legal guidelines are followed to avoid litigation and also, most importantly, to ensure that fairness prevails. I did not indicate otherwise.

I have not claimed to be well versed in the procedures of conducting public meetings, however I am well versed in common courtesy and human decency. It is my opinion, and no others, that the meeting was not what I felt was conducted with tact and decorum.

It is my understanding that when a person attending a public meeting does not agree with the speaker, they ask to be recognized by the chair and then voice their opinion once they have been granted the floor.

I am definitely not challenging the judgement or decision of the library board to reinstate any employee or their capability to follow due process because the Library Board members determined policy protocol was not followed by Ms. Beam.

However, it was relayed to me that some of the Library Board members indicated to Ms. Beam, before she took any action, that they supported her decision. It seems if policy was not followed, it could have been noted at that time and Ms. Beam could have been instructed by the Board as to the correct procedure.

Yes, my memories from the 20 years I worked at the library are, for the most part, harmonious.

I’m sorry they are not such for all.

I loved my years of employment there and to this day feel a deep regard for all of my fellow co-workers.

That is why it saddens me to know that there are some very loyal and dedicated employees who feel they are working in a hostile environment.

I believe all opinions matter, not just a few; since this is the “American way,” I believe that means I also have a right to an opinion.

It is my fervent prayer that a new director be found quickly — someone with the strength, courage and ability to once again make the library a harmonious place for all staff and patrons of the library to enjoy, a person with the skills to lead by example and encouragement and not by intimidation, bullying or displaying an attitude of superiority.

God bless America and God bless St. John the Baptist Parish Library.
