GARYVILLE — A LaPlace woman died Friday evening, the result of a two-vehicle wreck on Airline Highway, authorities said.
Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of the fatal crash shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday on Airline Highway at Sugarcane Road in Garyville that claimed the life of 66-year-old Ora Williams Duhe of LaPlace.
Louisiana State Police Troop B spokeswoman Melissa Matey said preliminary investigation revealed Duhe was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima south on Airline Highway in the right lane approaching Sugarcane Road. At the same time, a 2008 Dodge Ram truck, driven by Eugne Yujiro Howard, 37, of Baton Rouge, was stopped at a stop sign on Sugarcane Road.
“The Dodge Ram proceeded to turn north onto (Airline Highway) and was impacted by the Nissan on the driver’s side,” Matey said. “Duhe was pronounced dead on the scene, and Troopers determined that she was not wearing her seat belt.”
According to Matey, Howard was at a street that was only stop-sign protected and proceeded onto Airline Highway without stop light protection.
Matey said witness statements also indicate the Nissan Duhe was operating did not have headlights or parking lights illuminated.
As of early this week, authorities had not issued any citations or determined who was at fault in the wreck.
“(Troopers) are going to have to go out there at the time the crash happened, watch what the sun looks like, how dark is it, how far can you see,” Matey said. “There is a lot of stuff they are going to have to do as far as that investigation is concerned.”
Howard suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
Impairment is not suspected as a wreck factor, and the crash remains under investigation, according to Matey.
