CONVENT — While in jail for attempted murder, authorities said a Vacherie man was involved in a fight Nov. 19 that sent a jail employee to the hospital.

Dacein Braxton, 30, is being held for attempted second-degree murder in St. James Parish Jail in Convent.

St. James Sheriff Willy Martin Jr. said investigators believe Braxton shot Rogerelle Simon, 21, early in the morning Nov. 6 as part of an ongoing disagreement. Braxton was booked a week later after determined the suspect beat the victim in the head with a gun and later shot at him as he was leaving the area.

Just a few days after being booked for attempted second-degree murder, Martin said Braxton was involved in another altercation.

“He got into a fight while in jail with two of my jailers,” Martin said. “From what I know (the suspect) indicated that he needed to go to the restroom. We had him in an isolation cell at the time, which did not have access to a restroom. When he made the request, a jailer assisted him out of the jail cell and took him down the hall to the restroom. When he came out, he tried to beeline it to the front door. He probably thought it would be his way out.”

According to the Sheriff, the doors are secured and cannot be opened unless a controller pushes the button.

“They tried to get him under control and get him back to his cell,” Martin said. “He fought with one deputy first, and then another deputy came and assisted. He continued to fight until they were able to get him under control and got him back in his cell.”

The Sheriff said both of his deputies sustained injuries during the fight with Braxton.

“One of my deputies had to go to the hospital,” he said. “I think his knee was hurting more than his arm. They did an MRI on his knee. His elbow was also injured. The second deputy had a bite on his face and his upper arm close to his shoulder. Braxton was not injured.”

Braxton was officially charged Nov. 23 on two counts of battery of a correctional facility employee and second-degree battery.

“He is still in jail,” Martin said. “ He never posted bond for his previous charge. As far as I understand it he is probably still in isolation.”
