Drug arrest causes St. James concern

During a February meeting of the St. James Parish School Board, District 6 Representative Tyler Jasmin took some time to lightly scold parents in St. James Parish, saying he had been to many events where there were no parents in attendance.

“So everybody can argue for when things go wrong, but when things go right for the children, they have no support,” he said to a packed room.

It was a fairly bold remark for a first-term School Board member in his mid-20s who had only been on the job for a few weeks.

It set a tone for his representation, not a bad one, but certainly one of no-nonsense.

Unfortunately for members of his School Board district and for Jasmin, in particular, Wednesday’s news of his arrest screamed nonsense.

State Police Spokesman Bryan Lee said Jasmin, 26, of Vacherie was arrested Wednesday for numerous counts of obtaining a controlled dangerous substance by fraud, altering a prescription and possession of a schedule II controlled dangerous substance.

We recognize Jasmin is innocent until proven guilty, but if he or his closest family and friends recognize an actual problem is in place, all must be focused on getting him the help needed.

Drug use is a dangerous thing. It has no place around children and those in leadership. That’s a no-nonsense stance we can all agree with.
