RESERVE — A shooting victim told deputies from the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office he was shot from a passing car, but then changed his story, authorities said.

Deputies responded to the 8800 block of Houma Drive in Reserve at 8:25 p.m. Saturday following a shooting report and found a 17-year-old male subject with a gunshot wound to his foot.

The victim was taken to a New Orleans area hospital for treatment.

When asked, the victim told deputies a motorist in a passing care fired a gunshot, striking him in the foot. However, deputies said he could not provide a description of the shooter or the car.

Later on the same day, the victim changed his story.

“They called me and said we had a shooting,” Sheriff Mike Tregre said. “We all agreed that it didn’t sound right. He goes to the hospital, and we get an admission from him that he accidently shot himself.”

The sheriff said the gun used was a handgun, which the victim gave to a friend after the shooting.

According to Sgt. Dane Clement the victim told deputies he accidentally discharged his own gun and shot himself in the foot.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and possible charges are forthcoming pending the outcome of the investigation.

“If we charge him with anything, it would be filing a false police report,” Tregre said.

As of press time Tuesday, authorities are not releasing the type of gun involved or who the firearm was registered to.
