“We’ve lost to (the Spartans) for the last two years,” SCC head football coach Frank Monica said.

Monica said the Comets are going to practice as hard as they can to secure a win this week.

“We’re going to have a big mountain to climb,” Monica said. “(East Ascension) is a 5A team. They are extremely big. We are mismatched in size and will have to make some adjustments.”

Monica said the Spartans aren’t just bigger in the size of the team. The sizes of the players are bigger as well.

“The Spartans quarterback is a big guy and a really good play,” Monica said. “The running back is a really big guy, too. They have a 6’3” wide receiver and that’s bigger than anything we’ve got. The defensive line has a guy who is 6’3” and one who is 6’5.” They tower us. We need to be sure they are not in the back field.”

Monica explained the Comets need to play well in all three phases — offense, defense and special teams — to bring home a win.

“Offense needs to not run the clock,” Monica said. “Defense needs to not let anybody get through and special teams needs to not give anything up. If they do that, we can win like last week.”

The Comets’ week-4 slaughtering of the Central Baton Rouge Wildcats last week supplemented their season’s winning streak.

After a dramatic back and forth first half, SCC settled in to take the win over Central 56-20.

The Comets won the pregame coin toss, but the Wildcats quickly gained control of the ball and scored the first touchdown of the night.

“I felt we didn’t respond very well coming out of the locker room,” Monica said. “We came out and we didn’t have the intensity we needed to play a 5A school. We have to play over our heads to compete with these guys.”

The Comets will face the East Ascension Spartans at 7 p.m. Friday in Gonzales.
