LaPlace — The River Region Chamber of Commerce recently took part in a rapid response effort alongside local businesses, St. John the Baptist Parish and St. John Business Association to replenish school supplies for teachers and students at East St. John Elementary School in LaPlace after the school closed due to fire Aug. 13.

Chamber members and the St. John Business Association mobilized immediately, putting their donations together to help purchase learning supplies for students and teachers, who returned to school in another location Aug. 31.

“The swift response to the fire is just one example of local businesses and neighboring school systems from throughout the River Region coming together to help during a time of need,” Chamber executive director Chassity McComack said. “The Chamber is grateful to be part of this collaboration to support our schools in a time of need.

St. John Parish School Board superintendent Kevin George said school officials are thankful for the generosity and kindness of area businesses and residents from throughout the River Region.

“These efforts are a demonstration of the good neighbor efforts of our community leaders,” he said. “It shows how much education is valued by the River Region Chamber of Commerce and our local communities.”

ADM Grain donated $5,000 to the recovery efforts.

Other area businesses that contributed include: Arcellor Mittal, LFCU AMP, Raising Cane’s, Riverside Urgent Care, Butler Law, Valero, St. James Parish school system, FNB USA, Noranda Alumina, Office Depot, Oak Alley Plantation and St. James Hospital.
