GARYVILLE — Remy Amedee, a 53-year-old lifelong resident of Garyville, is announcing his candidacy for the St. John the Baptist Parish Council seat in District 2.

Amedee and his wife of 31 years, the former Kimberly Smith of LaPlace, have two children, Ryan and Ariel. Their son Ryan, a Captain in the US Air Force, received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M. Their daughter, Ariel, is a graduate of LSU and is seeking her Master’s Degree in Kinesiology.

After graduating from East St. John High School in 1980, Amedee worked at Cargill Molasses Liquids as an operator and Supervisor. In 1989 he moved to Marathon and has spent the past 26 years working as a Unit Operator, Shift Supervisor and Operations Specialist. Currently, he is an Operations Area Supervisor at Marathon with responsibility for a team of 40 operators.

Amedee has received extensive training and has become an experienced specialist in the Emergency Response field of Industrial Firefighting Field and Medical/Confined space rescue techniques. Additionally, he has served the residents of St. John Parish as a volunteer fire fighter in the Garyville Volunteer Fire Department.

During the 1980s and 1990s, he volunteered as a little league baseball coach with the Garyville Recreation and the Garyville Youth Organizations.

As a resident of the Plantation Oaks Subdivision, Amedee prepared and presented to the St. John Parish Council a citizen drainage study of the Hope and Angelina Plantation basins in Mt. Airy and western Garyville, where severe flooding problems were identified. The parish took action on his recommendations by installing additional drainage culverts under Railroad right of ways.

Amedee said he was also instrumental in persuading the St. John the Baptist Parish Council and library boards to construct a modern day library for the residents of Garyville. After Hurricane Isaac, Amedee was appointed by School Board member Albert “Ali” Burl to serve on the committee charged with selection of a project manager for the rebuilding of East St. John High and Lake Pontchartrain Elementary Schools.

While at Marathon, Amedee has served as a volunteer and continues to participate in the United Way. Through Marathon he has also served as a science fair judge at local schools and as an instructor at South Central Louisiana Vo-technical College in Process Technology.

Amedee said he has been a respected member of the Noranda CAP committee since its inception in mid 2000.
