LAPLACE — A gunman targeted a LaPlace home Tuesday night, opening fire on the residence’s unsuspecting occupants and injuring two, authorities said.

St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 300 block of West 2nd Street at 9:14 p.m. after numerous gunshots were reported.

Deputies found a 43-year-old victim with gunshots wounds to his upper torso, a victim Sheriff Mike Tregre said was shot while in his wheelchair.

Emergency medical personnel brought the victim to a New Orleans-area hospital for treatment.

As of press time Friday morning, the victim was reported in stable condition in the intensive care unit.

A second victim, who alerted police to the attack, was a 49-year-old man, who Tregre said was shot in the arm.

“The guy left the residence at West 2nd Street and went home with a gunshot wound,” Tregre said.

Once home, in the 1400 block of Cambridge Drive in LaPlace, the second victim called the Sheriff’s Office. Emergency medical service personnel also brought the second victim to a New Orleans-area hospital.

Authorities said Friday morning the victim had been treated and released from the hospital.

Tregre said the shooting wasn’t a case of someone picking a random house for assault.

“This was a designated attack,” Tregre said. “This was not random. The perpetrator knew whom he was going to the residence for. The guy concealed his face and knocked on the door. Once that door was opened, the perpetrator started firing.”

Because the investigation is ongoing, Tregre said investigators could not release details surrounding the shooting.

The third person at the residence during the shooting did not sustain any injuries.

Tregre said after the perpetrator knocked on the door, he covered his face before shooting. The victim told investigators the gunman was about 5 feet 9 to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed around 140 pounds. At the time of the shooting, the perpetrator was wearing a green long-sleeve shirt, light green pants and black shoes.

Authorities are not releasing the names of the victims.
