DONALDSONVILLE — The West St. John Rams were largely able to hold down the aggressive passing attack of the Donaldsonville Tigers while taking advantage of mistakes in their first road game of the season.

West St. John defeated Donaldsonville 28-18.

On offense, the Rams stuck with their two-quarterback system, giving Juwan Boudoin the start this week instead of Jemoine Green, who played every down at quarterback against St. James in the season opener.

“Juwan Boudoin started off, but Jemoine Green finished the game for us,” Walters said. “We moved (Green) around little bit. We are going to do some things with him as an athlete. He caught a few passes at receiver and he also played quarterback.”

The Rams took the lead early off a Juwan Boudoin pass to Reginald Ross for a touchdown. That makes Ross’s third touchdown reception in two weeks in his first year with the Rams after transferring from St. Charles Catholic.

The Tigers came right back, scoring a touchdown of their own but were unable to convert the extra point, leaving the score 7-6 early.

“We had to fight a little bit,” Walters said of the back-and-forth scoring early on. “Their guys made it pretty hard on us.”

Tailback Lamore Boudoin added the Rams’ next score off a long run for a touchdown, and then Jabari Walters picked up a blocked punt and ran it in to put West St. John up by two touchdowns.

Coming into the game, the Rams were expecting to see a lot out out of the Tigers’ passing game, especially going in the direction of 6-foot-5, 230-pound wide receiver Stephen Sullivan. Sullivan, an LSU commit, has been hyped early in the season but the Rams secondary was able to contain him.

“Our cornerbacks wanted to step up to the challenge,” Walters said. “Our guys are pretty short on the corners, but they play big. They didn’t back down from it, we kind of got in his face. He is a great athlete.”

Stephens scored on a long pass with just over a minute left in the game, but by that time the Rams had secured the victory.

Walters said a big key to his team’s success was the play of his defensive line.

“Up front we had some guys who pressured the quarterback a little bit,” Walters said. “They were making plays inside. We got after them up front and forced them to get the ball out a little quicker than they wanted to. It went in our favor.”

The Rams secondary was able to take advantage of mistakes in the Tigers’ passing game with Jamal Walters reeling in two interceptions and Kie’Ave Harry picking up another.

Walters said he was pleased with how his team’s gameplan came together and with the play of his players.

“I am happy with the win,” Walters said. “We haven’t beat Donaldsonville in the ten years I have been here. We have had them on the schedule a couple of times. It is pretty big for the program to get that off of our backs.”

West St. John next takes on Southern Lab at 7 p.m. Friday at home.
