Help protect those doing their job

“Kids in this parish can’t even try to be responsible and hold a job without worrying if they are going to be the next one in line. First McDonald’s, now this. That’s a damn shame.”

A L’OBSERVATEUR reader provided the preceding thought Monday morning on the newspaper’s Facebook page.

The sentiment was shared following news of a Saturday evening assault of a 19-year-old delivery man who was jumped by two perpetrators and robbed of his wallet and pizza.

The assault occurred sometime after 9:20 p.m. in the 100 block of River Pointe Drive in Reserve.

Sadly, the robbery occurred just a few days after a fast food employee in LaPlace was yanked out of the establishment through the restaurant’s drive-through window and beaten in the parking lot.

Because we live in a day and age where dimwits film and broadcast their foolishness for others to see, a video of the fast food assault has made its way through numerous views on YouTube.

We’re not sure what’s worse, the bystander who filmed the event or the commenter who praised the strength of the assaulter or certified the video as hilarious.

We only hope you are never the victim of assault and then further disgraced by some yokel who films it just to laugh at you later.

The young people who take the time to find jobs and work in our community’s service industry deserve our respect. Today, they deserve our support.

No one should feel vulnerable while taking hamburger orders or delivering pizzas.

Please, those in the community who can help police solve these crimes, share what you know so these violent perpetrators enjoy the fit of handcuffs.
