LAPLACE — Authorities confiscated a stolen gun after a surprised LaPlace resident noticed a bullet hole in her apartment.

St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an apartment in the 100 block of Ormond Boulevard in LaPlace at 3 a.m. Sunday. The complainant told deputies she heard a loud pop noise at approximately 2 a.m. while she was upstairs but did not see holes in a cabinet and wall until she went in her kitchen at 3 a.m., Sheriff Mike Tregre said.

No one was injured.

Deputies determined a projectile came from the adjacent apartment and spoke with the tenant there, who gave deputies access to the apartment for the investigation.

Deputies identified an adult male in an upstairs bedroom who had knowledge of the shooting, Tregre said.

“Detectives identified him as Caleb Hill, 22, of Creole Street in LaPlace, the brother of the tenant,” Tregre said in a release. “He told detectives that he stays with his sister sometimes, and she was not aware of the gun. Hill told detectives that he was handling the handgun when it accidentally discharged.”

Sgt. Dane Clement  said the shooting was deemed an accident, as there was “nothing to indicate otherwise.”

Tregre said authorities recovered a handgun from the apartment’s A/C closet, and a computer check on the gun revealed it was stolen in 2008 in St. John Parish.

Clement said no additional charges against Hill in the case are expected, but a separate investigation is under way to determine if Hill is responsible for the theft of the gun, which “was reported stolen from a vehicle in LaPlace in October 2008.”

Hill was booked with illegal use of a weapon, illegal possession of a stolen firearm and an outstanding attachment for contempt of court.

As of press time Tuesday morning, Hill remained in custody in lieu of a $13,150 bond set by Judge Madeline Jasmine.
