BATON ROUGE —  Riverside’s Von Julien became the first Rebels athlete in six years to capture an individual state track and field championship, winning the boys 200 meter dash at Friday’s Class 2A state meet at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.

Julien won a dramatic race, recording a time of 22.25 to edge out Sophie B. Wright’s Antoine Oates (22.28).

He’d been matched up with Oates twice before, coming up second at the regional and at the district meet. But Friday, Julien ran a season-best time.

“You see his talent on the football field and basketball court, and he works just as hard in track and field,” Riverside coach Joe Trosclair said. “We’re all so excited for him. (Oates) got him a couple of times before, but Von got off the blocks really well and ran a great race from the beginning.

“When we looked up and saw his name on top the leaderboard, it was a big thrill. He’s worked hard all season long and it’s great to see that work pay off.”

Hahnville’s Brandon Singleton was another River Region champion, a two-time winner as he captured the Class 5A boys 110 hurdles championship with a time of 13.81, outpacing Rummel’s Kristian Fulton (14.17), and the 300 meter hurdles crown (37.53) over Haughton’s Antonio Woodfork (38.43).

Julien also helped spur the Rebels boys 4×100 relay team to second place (43.15, Darrion Cook, Kendall Martin. JuJuan Bell, Julien). Jordan Andrews (seventh, high jump, 5-08); JuJuan Bell (eighth, triple jump, 38-02.75 and ninth, high jump, 5-08); Cameron Cook (ninth, javelin, 127-04); James Davis (seventh, discus, 109-02) and the 4×400 relay team (seventh, 3:41.51, Tyler Gauthier, Darrion Cook, Von Julien, Hardell Mack) rounded out Riverside boys competitors.

Among Rebel girls, Toni Perrin (fourth, 200, 26.71); Rae Alexander (sixth, long jump, 16-01.50); the 4×200 relay team (fifth, 1:50.01, Kolbi Johnson, Kennedy White, Toni Perrin and Rae Alexander); the 4×100 relay team (fourth, 50.88, Toni Perrin, Kennedy White, Tajah Greenup, Rae Alexander) and Ja’Keyra Gautreaux, triple jump, ninth, 9.56) each wrapped up their season at state.

West St. John’s Marcus Boudoin (second, 300 hurdles, 40.83 and ninth, 110 hurdles, 22.04) highlighted the Rams’ day at the Class 1A meet. The 4×100 relay team (fifth, 43.79, Kie’Ave Harry, Marcus Boudoin, Lamore Boudoin and Austin Alexander) rounded out WSJ boys competitors.

WSJ’s Christina Holmes  (sixth, javelin, 101-03; ninth, high jump, 4-04) represented the Lady Rams.

For East St. John’s boys, 4×200 relay team (sixth, 1:29.40, Javon Brown, Jarrod Jackson, Dontrell Allen, Demonte Coxie); and Dontrell Allen (sixth, 100, 10.73); Jarrod Jackson (eighth, 400, 51.93) each finished in Class 5A’s top nine.

ESJ girls saw Ryanesha Denet (seventh, 200, 26.20 and eighth, 100, 12.68) and the 4×400 relay team (ninth, 4:35.30, Keilah Scott, Ladeja Harris, Emily Bartholomew, Angelique Johnson) compete.

St. Charles Catholic’s Patrick Ratliff (seventh, javelin, 43.70) and Heidi Roussel (seventh, javelin, 93-04) and Lexi Tran (eighth, discus, 22.52) represented the Comets at Saturday’s 3A meet.

ST. JAMES: Kaylnn Martin (fourth, 2A girls 100 hurdles, 16.74), Kionne Octave (fifth, girls 100, 12.91); the 4×100 girls relay team (seventh, 51.81, Kaylnn Martin, Keyonna Brown, Kelse Alexander, Kionne Octave); and St. James’ Ceth Cooper (eighth, boys 110 hurdles, 16.16).

HAHNVILLE: Breanne Bias (third, 5A girls triple jump, 36-10.75); Alexis Williams (sixth, 400, 58.11); Emily Blanchard (eighth, 3200, 12:42.89); Aeriel Smith (eighth, 300 hurdles, 49.40); and the 4×200 relay team (eighth, 1:47.12, Breanne Bias, Aeriel Smith, Alexis Williams and Ashlyn Jack).
