St. Charles Catholic freshman Mikey Landry finished fifth at the Division III golf state tournament, which was contested Monday and Tuesday, shooting a two-day score of 151 (79, 72).

University’s Trey Winstead earned the individual Division III state championship with a score of 144. Dunham won the team Division III title with a score of 624.

Landry emerged as an individual qualifier for the state tournament by shooting a 75 at last week’s regional.

The Comets fell short of qualifying for the state match as a team, finishing sixth at the regional with a score of 322.

University Lab won the regional title, shooting 283 as a team. Catholic-New Iberia (296), Parkview Baptist (308), Dunham (311) and Newman (318) were the top five finishers, with the two four advancing to this week’s state tournament, which was contested Monday and Tuesday.

Landry led the Comets at the regional. Cameron Torres shot 78, Jacob Jensen shot 82, Emile Cupit shot 87 and Daniel Jaubert shot 91.

St. Charles coach Gary Zeringue said the Comets’ regional score of 322 was the best 18-hole score the team has finished with at a major postseason tournament, but noted the regional field his team was up against was quite difficult.

“We may have been in the toughest regional, top to bottom,” Zeringue said.

“There were a few others, up in Division I, but this one was probably the toughest in terms of depth.

“Our score of 322 would have put us right in the middle of the 32 teams at state. But that’s a luck of the draw element.

“You can’t control it, and it’s the same in every sport. I’m proud of my guys. We had a very good season. We were 11 strokes away from the cutoff, and last year we were 19. So we’re closing the gap, and we feel like we can maybe close it even further next year. It’ll be a challenge (to get to state), but not impossible.”

Torres just missed the cut with his score of 78. The senior wrapped up a memorable prep career at St. Charles at the tournament.

“He’s been the driving force behind our team for the past four years,” Zeringue said. “When he came in, we were short of golfers. He was playing on the baseball team and he pulled double duty with us.

“We quickly realized he was the best player in our program. He was a great leader and he had a solid, solid career for us.”
