LAPLACE — It was a small turnout but a big win for St. John the Baptist Parish government.

Unofficial numbers from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office showed St. John voters chose Saturday to renew a property tax set to expire at the end of the year.

The count shows 1,267 votes (70.86 percent) for the renewal, compared to 521 votes (29.14 percent) against.

Passage of the 1 mill tax, which generates approximately $450,000 annually, extends the tax for 10 years.

The tax has been in place since at least 1996, and means no changes in parish homeowners’ taxes.

With the renewal, the parish maintains $447,000 for maintenance of buildings beginning in 2016, parish officials said.
