LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic added wins over a pair of 19-win teams this week in non-district baseball action, besting University, 4-1, at home Wednesday and winning at St. Thomas Aquinas, 2-1, Tuesday.

Against University (19-10), Zach Roussel allowed one run on five hits. Roussel had a two-hit shutout going into the seventh inning before allowing a solo-home run for the Cubs’ lone score.

Justin Loupe, Lloyd Nash and Dane Authement each drove in runs for the Comets (19-10).

Against St. Thomas Aquinas (19-9), Austin Weber tossed a complete game to earn the win. He allowed five hits and struck out seven, allowing a single run in the first and no more the rest of the way.

Weber and Justin Ory each drove in a run for the Comets.

“I feel pretty good about where we are, and I hope we’re peaking at the right time,” St. Charles coach Wayne Stein said. “We’ve developed that one-two punch atop our rotation and we feel really good about that heading into the postseason.”

Weber started the Comets’ April 17 game against Lusher, and got a second straight turn in the rotation Tuesday, on three days rest, as the Comets faced STA.

“I wanted to see how he’d fare on a quick turnaround like that, with the playoffs around the corner,” Stein said. “He really battled and gave us the performance we needed to earn a tough win. These last two games were big in terms of power points. I was also happy to see us win a couple of tight games at this time of year.”

The Comets were ninth in Class 3A as of Friday morning, and with one game remaining — 10:30 a.m. today at St. Charles against visiting Episcopal — SCC appears very likely to host an opening round game.

SCC has won five straight games and eight of its past nine.

“Our program has always been about the postseason,” Stein said. “We’ve never been that team peaking in March or even early April. I think our kids are starting to smell the postseason and its showing on the field.”
