THIBODAUX — Highlighted by a strong performance by sprinter Dontrell Allen, the East St. John boys finished third while the girls finished fourth overall at Friday’s Thibodaux track and field meet.
Allen set a new Thibodaux meet record with a time of 10.33 in the 100 as he captured the victory in that event. He also took first in the 200 with a time of 22.12 and was named the boys track MVP for the event.
The East St. John quartet of Jalen Brown, DeAndre Milton, Jarrod Jackson and Dontrell Allen won the 4×200, while the 4×100 team of Brown, Allen, Xavier Lewis and Jackson won the 4×100.
It was the first meet of the season for Lewis, an LSU committed football star and one of the state’s fastest sprinters.
Dequan Cross took second in the 300 meter hurdles (42.16).
The Wildcat girls 4×100 team of Melinda Perrilloux, Chaylin Smith, LaDeja Harris and Troynisha Gerard won the 4×100 with a time of 41.3. The 4×200 relay team of Keilah Scott, Ryanesha Denet, Ladeja Harris and Troynisha Gerard took second place with a time of 1:44.88, while the 4×400 team of Angelique Johnson, Scott, Denet and Harris took second place with a time of 4:16.25.
“Our exchanges were clean and we showed we had a lot of depth,” ESJ girls coach Mark Creecy said. “We held a couple of girls out and we’re seeing some of our younger athletes really excel. We’re working with a lot of speed.
“Last year, we made it to state with a mark of 51.5 (in the 4×100), so we like where we are.”
Denet, a freshman, took second in the 800 with a time of 2:33.09 and third in the 200 (26.68).
Gerard also took fourth in the 100, setting what Creecy noted as the second best time so far this year in the Wildcats’ district, a mark of 12.70.
Twenty-four schools participated at the meet. The Thibodaux girls and South Lafourche boys came away with the competition’s respective titles.
The Wildcats are scheduled to compete today at the Woodlawn meet in Baton Rouge. Then, on April 23 ESJ will compete in its district meet.
