LAPLACE — Police have not released any suspect information following the BB gun shooting of a St. John the Baptist Parish school bus that left children on the bus “visibly shaken and terrified.”
Sgt. Dane Clement of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deferred questions on the number of students on the bus at the time of the shooting, the grades they were in or what school they attended to the St. John the Baptist Parish School District.
School District officials said there were approximately 35 students on the bus in grades kindergarten through eighth grade from East St. John Elementary.
Although he could not provide any details on a suspect, Clement said investigators were tracking down leads.
Clement said he was not aware of any threats made against students before or after the shooting.
In a release sent to media members Friday afternoon, authorities said deputies responded to the intersection of Hebert Drive and Breaux Drive in LaPlace at 2:47 p.m. Thursday following a shooting report.
The bus driver told deputies when she stopped to let students off the bus, she heard children in the back of the bus yell, “He shot the bus,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies found a window on the bus shattered.
“The incident scared several students on the bus, but none of the students were injured,” the release said. “(The bus driver) saw a male subject running away from the area wearing a grey-hooded sweatshirt and black pants. The bus driver told deputies that student passengers were visibly shaken and terrified.”
Paramedics called to the scene checked the students for injuries, authorities said, adding none were reported.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office TIPS line at 985-359-TIPS or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111. Those with information who call Crimestoppers do not have to testify in court.
