RESERVE — With a theme of “Yesterday Meets Today,” the turnout was “fantastic” Feb. 26 during East St. John High School P.T.O.’s alumni reunion.
PTO President Paula Henderson said special guest Ron Washington, former Texas Rangers and World Series manager, was on hand to honor some of the school’s successful sports teams.
Many members of the 1980 state championship football team attended. The talented team was led by quarterback Timmy Bird.
Henderson said the 1992 state championship baseball team was recognized as well.
“Mr. Ron Washington paid tribute to this record-breaking, historic team,” Henderson said. “The emotional part of the program was when Leroy ‘Poppa’ Williams (who died in a car wreck) was honored. His daughter and father accepted the award on his behalf.
“What a night! We also recognized all other alumni, with the Class of 1993 winning the Best Spirit Award.”
Parish President Natalie Robottom, alumnus Sheriff Mike Tregre and alumnus District Attorney Bridgett Dinvaut spoke during the program.
The event took place at the Leon Godchaux gym in Reserve.
