LAPLACE — The sixth grade students in Emma Vicknair’s English-Language Arts class at St. Joan of Arc Catholic School are working on descriptive writing while reading “The Witch of Blackbird Pond.”

They are comparing the bright, sunny setting of Barbados, where the book begins, to the gray, sometimes gloomy, setting of Connecticut, where the main character moves.

Before writing a descriptive essay, they sketched scenes from both places and painted them to bring the settings to life.
