LAPLACE — St. Charles Charles continued a strong start to the 2014 season under coach Nolan Louque, besting Grand Isle, 36-25, and Crescent City, 34-23, last weekend.

Lela Hill and Maddie Murphy led the way in each game. Hill scored 14 points against Grand Isle while Murphy scored eight against Grand Isle. Caroline Julian added six points. Hill and Murphy scored 11 and 10, respectively, against Crescent City.

St. Charles moved to 6-3 with the two victories.

While the Comets trailed early, SCC made some defensive adjustments to take control of the action against Grand Isle.

“We’ve been tuning up,” Louque said. “We had the opportunity to work a few different offensive sets in, and those really worked out well for us. Grand Isle got up on us, and we went to a Diamond and one to take away their best scorer. The girls did a really nice job working with a new defense, and we forced a lot of turnovers.”

Louque said a big plus has been the Comets beginning to hit their outside shots, giving go-to scorers Hill and Murphy an easier time getting into the lane, as well as making the post game a viable option.

“When we’re hitting from the outside, that really opens up our inside game,” Louque said. “Maddie and Lela, those two have really been anchoring our team.

“We’re getting our volleyball girls in there, now, and I feel like we’re rounding into form.

“We got to get everyone some playing time and I don’t think that’s a small thing. With district coming up, we’ll need everyone to step up.”

The Comets were scheduled to open district play Thursday, but that game has been postponed to a later date to be determined.
