BATON ROUGE — St. Charles Catholic came up one win shy of the state volleyball tournament, the No. 13 seeded Comets falling at No. 4 University Lab Monday, 25-6, 25-13 and  25-19.

Alyssa Arceneaux had 18 digs for SCC. Grace Mohon had seven assists. Kaitlyn Lowry, Crysta Remondet and Maddie Murphy each had two kills.

The Comets had advanced the regional round for the second consecutive year after a first-round victory over Port Allen; prior to 2013, SCC hadn’t advanced in the postseason since 2008.

SCC found its foothold after a Cubs avalanche in the first game, but couldn’t extend the match to four or five sets.

“I think we were a little intimidated to start the match, because of their height,” St. Charles coach Meghan Ericksen said. “We’ve had a tendency to start slow as it is. As the match progressed, we looked more comfortable and we played our best toward the end. The girls kept fighting, and I was proud of that. They refused to quit.”

University Lab (31-11) advanced to the state quarterfinals, where it defeated Archbishop Hannan.

SCC (14-18) will lose two seniors from this year’s squad, team captain Kaitlyn Lowry and Victoria Mohon.

Ericksen said the Comets will miss both players next season, but also expressed excitement over the remainder of the team’s core returning.

“It’s a chance to build some real team chemistry,” Ericksen said. “We’re going to focus on our conditioning and on getting better every day, and next season we’ll look to push even further.”
