Keller: Chaplain’s view of ’03 Lutcher team was special

Because the temperature was chilly Monday morning, I grabbed an old LHS Staff windbreaker from 2003.

While having coffee with Allen Andrepont, A.J. James and Dickie Lyons, they asked me what LHS stood for. I told them it was Lutcher High School and continued that in 2003, Coach Tim Detillier asked me to be the chaplain for the team and considered me a staff member.

Allen sarcastically said, “You must have been considered a staff infection.” After a good laugh at my expense that I also enjoyed, I shared about the 2003 Lutcher High football season.

The team and I had a rough start.  The place kicker was from Europe and in the first three games he missed three extra points and a field goal. We lost those games, and the fans became a little upset.

During the fourth game against Assumption High, some Quarterback Club members led by my friend, “Wop” Foret began to chant, “Keller, quit praying for us.” That game was the beginning of a miracle season.

It was a close game and in the final seconds Coach Detillier called for a field goal. I thought he was crazy, but the field goal try was successful and Lutcher won its first game of the season.

The winning continued, and Lutcher lost only one other game to E.D. White. They made the playoffs and won all five playoff games, including defeating the first, second, third and fifth seeds in Class 3A on their way to the State Championship.

I spoke to Tim recently and told him that he beat at least three teams that were better than them. He agreed.

In the State Championship game, Lutcher beat the No. 1 seed Notre Dame of Crowley 15-7. Believe it or not, the unpredictable place kicker made a field goal that sealed the win.

As chaplain, my prayers didn’t win any games and I would like to say I hope they didn’t lose the first three.

The bottom line is God was in control of every game.

It was an exciting year, and I’m glad Coach Detillier allowed me to be a part of it.
