EDGARD — West St. John got back on track after a rough stretch in its schedule, snapping a three-game losing streak with a sweep of Covenant Christian at home Tuesday, 25-12, 25-7 and 25-19.
Kaieonne Sorapuru had five kills, while Maya Trench added four and Dmyriah Herbert had two.
“We executed well,” West St. John coach Glenda Mattos said. “We’d lost a couple of matches there where we just weren’t clicking, and we couldn’t put our finger on why. Things went well (Tuesday), and it was good to get out there and come away with a win.”
It was West St. John’s second victory over Covenant Christian this season, and the Rams’ second district win of the year.
It’s first win over Covenant was the team’s first district match, but WSJ (10-5, 2-3) dropped two district battles against Houma Christian and another against Central Catholic since that victory.
Mattos said she believes her team has “everything it needs” to win matches against those perennial district championship contenders, but at times loses its confidence.
“No matter who you face, you’ve got to know you belong on the court with them,” Mattos said. “As far as skills go, ability, athleticism, we’ve got that. But it’s a matter of our girls believing in themselves all the time, and not letting that fade away in a tough matchup.”
West St. John is set to return to action Tuesday and Wednesday, facing Central Catholic on the road before finishing at home against White Castle, when the Rams will celebrate their senior night.
RAMS FALL TO HOUMA CHRISTIAN – West St. John pushed Houma Christian further than in the first matchup between the teams, but ultimately fell in four games Monday, 25-8, 22-25, 25-13 and 25-14.
Sorapuru had five digs, three blocks and two kills for WSJ. Trench had four kills.
