EDGARD — West St. John coach Robert Valdez was almost at a loss for words.

“No, never,” Valdez said. “I’d never had a team score 80. I’ve never been in this situation.”

Until now.

It was a homecoming like never before for the Rams Friday night, who rolled up a whopping 80 points en route to an 80-8 district victory over East Iberville.

“It was one of those deals where everything started snowballing,” Valdez said. “East Iberville was a little undermanned. Our kids did a good job remaining focused and continuing to compete hard. We put our kids through two brutal weeks of practice, and they responded to it and didn’t give into the distractions of homecoming week.”

Lamore Boudoin rushed for a game-high 115 yards and two touchdowns on just three carries. Bradley Borne gained 77 yards and scored twice on four attempts and Dontell Louper had four carries for 64 yards. West St. John rushed for 289 as a team. Austin Alexander scored twice as well, Jemoine Green completed 7 of 8 pass attempts for 69 yards.

Jabari Walters led WSJ in receiving with three receptions for 41 yards. Morell Bartholomew caught one pass for a 5-yard touchdown.

Da’Jon Taylor intercepted two passes for the Rams, returning one of them 67 yards for a touchdown. Jamal Walters and Devrin Johnson each intercepted passes as well.

It was an especially big night for Jamal Walters, who returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown in addition to his interception, and nearly took another punt to the house as well — he was tackled at the 2 after an 80-yard return.

“We’ll razz him pretty good for not scoring on that 80-yarder when we watch the film,” Valdez joked.

The win sets up a showdown between the Rams (4-2, 2-0) and Ascension Catholic (6-1, 2-0) next week.
