RESERVE — East St. John is off to a solid start on the volleyball court, posting a 2-1 record through its opening week of play.

The Wildcats bested St. Mary’s School and Karr while falling to West St. John, and will attempt to get on a roll at this weekend’s Broadmoor tournament.

East St. John fell to the rival Rams in the season opener for both teams Monday, WSJ taking a win in four games, 25-21, 19-25, 25-14 and 25-22.

For the Rams, Maya Trench tallied six kills, five digs and five aces.

Sydnei Harrison had nine kills. Brittany August served seven aces and Tre’Shaun Trench made 10 digs.

Melinda Perrilloux led East St. John with eight kills. Jessica Scioneaux had 12 assists. Lexus Smith served four aces.

The Wildcats followed up the loss with a rebound performance against Karr, topping the host Cougars 25-20, 19-25, 25-13 and 25-18.

Charda Berthelot made eight kills. Scioneaux had 12 assists while Smith served three aces.

On Wednesday against St. Mary’s, the Wildcats captured a win in three games, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-18.

Berthelot made 11 kills to lead ESJ.

“The girls felt they could have played much better against West St. John,” ESJ assistant coach Ronnie Smith said. “I thought that was a big reason we came out and played so well against Karr. We had some adversity and we saw some of our juniors step up, especially. Against St. Mary’s, we were charged up again because we wanted to build on the Karr win. We were able to shut them out 3-0. We saw a lot of positive things out there.”
