LAPLACE – The body of an elderly man was found in a St. John the Baptist Parish waterway on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 23.

St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Hope Canal between Interstate 10 and Lake Maurepas in Garyville after a passing boater called and reported finding a body in the water.

Upon their arrival, deputies located Lanny Cambre, 73, of Garyville in the water near his boat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators located Cambre’s truck and boat trailer at the boat launch on Hope Canal

just north of Airline Highway. Cambre’s family told investigators he was on the canal fishing.

Investigators found no evidence to indicate foul play was a factor in his death. An autopsy was scheduled for the morning of April 24 to determine the cause of death.

As of press time, no additional information was available.
