Sheriff named to law enforcement commission

BATON ROUGE – Gov. Bobby Jindal recently announced the appointment of St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne to the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice.
Champagne, a resident of Luling, will be appointed to serve as a professional that has a vital concern with law enforcement and the administration of criminal justice, as required by statute.
Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice serves to oversee and encourage the adoption of methods by which law enforcement can be made more effective and justice can be administered more efficiently and fairly. It also helps to coordinate programs throughout the state in areas relating to the police, the courts, and corrections.
According to statute, the commission is comprised of 55 members as follows:
• The chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Section C, or his designee;
• The chairman of the House Committee on the Administration of Criminal Justice or his designee;
• The secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections or his designee;
• The chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court or his designee;
• The chief judge of each of the courts of appeal;
• The president of the Louisiana Juvenile Judges› Association;
• The president of the Louisiana District Attorneys› Association;
• The president of the Louisiana State Troopers› Association;
• The president of the Louisiana Sheriffs› Association;
• The president of the Louisiana Municipal Association;
• The president of the Louisiana Chiefs of Police Association;
• The chairman of the Louisiana State Bar Association Section on Criminal Law;
• The state public defender employed by the Louisiana Public Defender Board;
• The director of state police;
• Three district attorneys appointed by the governor;
• Three sheriffs appointed by the governor;
• Two chiefs of police appointed by the governor;
• A district court judge appointed by the governor;
• A juvenile court judge appointed by the governor;
• Three professional or at-large members appointed by the president of the Senate;
• Three professional or at-large members appointed by the speaker of the House of Representatives; and
• 15 professional or at-large members appointed by the governor as may have a vital concern with law enforcement and the administration of criminal justice;
• The president of the Louisiana chapter of the National Constables Association;
• One person appointed by the governor from a list of at least three persons submitted by Victims and Citizens Against Crime, Inc.;
• The president of the Louisiana Union of Police or his designee;
• The attorney general or his designee; and
• The deputy secretary of the Office of Juvenile Justice of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections or his designee.
Additionally, each gubernatorial appointee is subject to senate confirmation.

Percy “Rick” Richard III of Madisonville is the Mandeville Chief of Police. Richard will be appointed to serve as a chief of police, as required by statute.
