St. John sales tax increase passes

LAPLACE – The voters of St. John the Baptist Parish gave Sheriff Mike Tregre an early Christmas present when they greenlighted a quarter-cent sales tax increase to fund the hiring of more officers and other Sheriff’s Office-related matters.
Three-fifths of voters cast ballots in favor of the measure.
This was the second time this year the tax increase appeared on the ballot in St. John Parish. In April voters rejected the measure – something Tregre attributed to poor timing because Gov. Bobby Jindal also had a sales tax increase on the table at the time.
