LAPLACE – The local Frostop in LaPlace gave thanks to customers for its history and longevity during a 55th anniversary celebration.
The event drew several antique cars for its “Cruise In” open car show. Also, regular prize drawings were held. Music was provided by Scott Forsythe, aka “DJ Scotty.” Employees gave away Frisbees, backpacks, pens and car magnets.
Since it was built in 1958, the LaPlace Frostop and its rotating mug have become a fixture and a landmark on Airline Highway. Morris Terry built the restaurant, then leased it until 1973, when his daughter, Evenlyn, and her husand, Jimmie Toler, took over. Their daughter, Terry, joined her parents as owner-manager after graduating from LSU 1993.
Though the LaPlace Frostop has completed two renovations, it has retained its old-fashioned, drive-in atmosphere. Jimmie Toler said the iconic rootbeer mug and style of the restaurant is unique to the location, because Frostop discontinued franchising in the ’80s.
“It’s one of the last places you can get food made-to-order. You go in, you know your customers, and they know you,” said Terry.
Evelyn Toler said the event was so busy “she couldn’t hardly look up.” The family is pleased with the community support and turnout.
“People keep coming back. Because we’re a family-owned business, they appreciate the fact that we treat them like they want to be treated,” said Jimmie Toler.
Evelyn Toler said the businesses receives many compliments on its service, and especially its food.
“How many people have a job where people are always telling you how much they like what you’re doing,” said Evelyn Toler.
