The Dance Company of Yvonne’s Directions In Dance from Lutcher recently attended the Starpower 2013 Orlando World Championships held at the Dolphin Resort. The dancers competed in several divisions including solos, small groups, large group and lines. There were more than 1,500 acts and more than 100 studios in attendance from places as far away as Guam, Mexico, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
The YDID company was honored to be one of 19 studios that were selected out of 100 studios to recompete their three overall high scoring routines at the prestigious Battle of the Stars, which was broadcast live online. Out of 1,500 acts only 104 were invited to the Battle of the Stars.
The small group 8 and under “Mermaids” was awarded a 5-star ranking (highest possible), first in their division, fifth overall, special judges award “crisp and clean” and was named a finalist in the battle.
Their 8 and under line “Who Woke Snow White Up?” was another number that was awarded a 5-star ranking (highest possible), first in their division, fifth place overall, special judges award: Darling Disney Divas and was named a finalist in the battle.
The entire 49 member company performed in the line division “Dance 4 Me” and was awarded a 5-star ranking (highest possible), first in their division, ninth overall and placed fifth in the battle.
With the help and support of the community, many friends and family, YDID was awarded the people’s choice award, which is given to the one routine that gets the most votes during the battle either by texting or voting on ine.
Each studio that makes it to the battle has its name put on a wheel for a chance to win a cruise from Royal Caribbean Cruise lines. After two spins and it landing on “spin again” Team YDID was super excited when it landed on Yvonne’s.
The dancers and their families enjoyed a week of the most amazing dance competition that they have ever attended and of course visiting the Disney/Universal theme parks and Sea World. Team YDID brought nearly 300 supporters to Orlando to cheer on the dancers.
Starpower has three levels of competition: Star, All Star and Power levels. All of YDID’s solos and group dancers were entered in the Power division, which is the most advanced level. The competitors in the Power division are scored on a more difficult scale than the other levels. StarPower uses a 1-5 star ranking.
