LAPLACE – After helping to lift Delgado to one of the best seasons in school history in his second season with the team, former St. Charles Catholic standout Brady Hitt said his college baseball career would indeed continue.
He made it official recently, as Hitt signed with Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama.
Hitt went 5-3 in 20 appearances over his two year Delgado career as part of a pitching staff that helped lift the Dolphins to No. 1 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I poll for the first time in school history.
But with his time at Delgado up, Hitt said he weighed his options. Spring Hill emerged as the clear best fit for the left-hander.
“The school definitely caught my eye right away. It’s just a beautiful campus,” said Hitt. “You walk around there and the grounds are kept perfectly. There’s a beautiful chapel in the middle of everything … I just thought it was the right place and the best opportunity for me.”
The prospect of immediate playing time was a draw, he said. Spring Hill has an open spot for a weekend starter on the mound. Just as attractive to him was the chance to swing the bat again, however; Spring Hill’s coaching staff has offered him the chance to break into the batting lineup as a regular, something he didn’t have the chance to do at Delgado.
Hitt made his mark with his bat at St. Charles Catholic, setting numerous Comet records as a senior. He hit .540 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs, earning honors as District MVP and as an All-State selection. The Comets advanced to the state quarterfinals that season and entered the postseason as Class 3A’s top-seed.
“I feel a little rusty there,” said Hitt of swinging the bat. “Hopefully with some work every day, I’ll get back to where I was pretty quickly.”
While at first he was skittish about leaving his home state to go to school, now he says he’s embracing the opportunity.
“It’s a chance to get out on my home, in a brand new city in a new state,” said Hitt. “I didn’t want to at first, but after awhile I realized, ‘I need to go.’
“I’m going into my last two years of playing college baseball, so I plan to make them count.”
