LAPLACE – The St. John the Baptist Parish public school district currently has openings for 4-year-olds in its preschool programs for the 2013-14 school year.
Children must be 4 years old by Sept. 30, 2013, to be eligible.
Applications are available at the following locations: the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board Office in  Reserve; the St. John Child Development Center in Garyville; East St. John Elementary School in LaPlace; West St. John Elementary School in Edgard; any branch of the St. John the Baptist Parish Library; and on the district’s website at www.stjohn.k12.la.us under “Links.”
Applications must be returned to the St. John Child Development Center or the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board Office with the needed documents listed on the application. Those documents include a copy of the child’s birth certificate, Social Security card, medical insurance or Medicaid card, documentation of child’s disability (if applicable), immunization records and income verification.
Children will be admitted regardless of family income. However, income may be used to determine in which 4-year-old program students will be placed – Head Start, LA4, Model Early or universal pre-K. Preference for enrollment in the preschool program is given to 4-year-olds. Open spots may then be offered to 3-year-olds from the current waiting list.
This year, just two years after St. John began its universal pre-K program, students scored above the national average in math and language arts on the Developing Skills Checklist, a test which measures their readiness for kindergarten.
