March brings an array of changes

The month of March is almost upon us and with it comes the joys of spring in the River Parishes.
Many residents look forward to wearing fewer layers in the warmer temperatures of the season. With its moderate temperatures, it is the perfect time for outdoor activities before the heat of summer relegates everyone to the indoor comfort of air conditioning. Wildflowers splash the landscape with color, and festivals start showing up just about every weekend. The days grow longer, and the presence of sunshine seems to put s spring in everybody’s step.
As with all things in life, however, we must take the bad with the good, for with March also comes the frequent arrival of inclement weather as the forces of Mother Nature battle for supremacy. Spring thunderstorms bring with them an array of dangers. Torrential rains can bring on flooding, and more unpredictable hazards such as hail, lightning and tornadoes can produce even more dire results. With so many in the community still struggling to get back on their feet after Hurricane Isaac, these extra hindrances can be especially tough to manage.
Residents should be mindful of weather forecasts every day to avoid further losses from weather disasters. Staying indoors during inclement weather is usually the best option, so be sure to be aware if bad weather is on the way. Parish communications offices often issue alerts, and these are posted to lobservateur.com as they are received. In addition, citizens should take the time to prepare emergency kits filled with necessities for their cars or homes. Flashlights, crank radios, ponchos, blankets, tinned or freeze dried food and sandbags are all wise choices to invest in.
So as you get ready to enjoy all that spring has to offer, keep in mind that danger may be lurking just around the bend.
