LUTCHER – Local members of the Louisiana Legislature and parish and town officials joined the Lutcher community Saturday as the town celebrated Black History Month.
The program began with a march up Main Street from Lutcher Elementary School to the Lutcher High School auditorium, where a full program of entertainment and education was planned.
With local author and poet Rosalind Davis serving as mistress of ceremonies, the crowd was treated to uplifting, spiritual songs and inspiring dance and spoken word pieces before the day’s guest of honor, Southern University President Dr. Ronald Mason Jr., took the stage to share his unique insights into the African-American experience.
“Black history is really the history of the world,” he said. “It’s what we do today that says what yesterday was and what tomorrow’s going to be.”
Near the end of the program, which concluded with music from the Lutcher High School Atomic Bulldog Marching Band, Mason was presented with a key to both the town of Lutcher and St. James Parish.
