HAHNVILLE – The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office issued 113 summonses and confiscated an estimated $10,000 in fireworks over the 2012 New Year’s holiday because of the illegal use of fireworks inside the parish. The majority of the summonses were issued between 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.
Under the parish ordinance 92-10-23, anyone found guilty of violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and will be fined no more than $100, spend 30 days in jail or both.
Every home received a telephone call on New Year’s Eve reminding residents that firework activity is illegal, in addition to the news releases and postings on social networks.
“It is disheartening that so many chose to participate in this illegal activity, especially after the extensive publicity reminding residents that the sale, possession and use of fireworks was illegal in St. Charles Parish,” said Sheriff Greg Champagne. “The sheriff’s office does not make the laws, but it is our responsibility to enforce them.”
