While the season is still young, West St. John is off to one of — if not the — most impressive starts in Lady Rams history.
The Rams moved to 4-0 with a win over Higgins Monday, setting a team-record in the process in an 89-61 win on the road Tuesday.
WSJ’s 89 points is the most ever scored in a single game by the Lady Rams. It came on the back of a red-hot shooting night that saw WSJ can 10 3-pointers, six of those by Jaylyn Gordon, who finished with a game-high 29 points.
Gordon wasn’t alone. Maya Trench scored 26 points while JuJuan Nicholas added 17.
West St. John started hot, taking a 32-17 lead after a quarter and a 54-36 lead at the half.
“It seemed like we shot 90 percent,” said West St. John coach Lester Smith. “We were able to get out and run on them and score before they could get set defensively. We were on from the outside and when everything’s clicking like that, we’re tough to defend.”
The win came on the heels of the Rams winning the championship game of the Bayou Invitational decisively over host Ellender (2-1), 56-36, six days prior.
Gordon scored 22 points to lead WSJ. Nicholas scored 15 and Trench scored 14.
The Rams didn’t lose in any quarter to the Patriots. They took a 28-15 lead into the half and steadily increased the lead from there.
“That game came down to a dominant defensive performance,” said Smith. “I was a little surprised at the way we won … Ellender has a good team. But our guards outplayed theirs and set the tone.”
The Rams start to the season is all the more impressive when considering that of the 1A squad’s four opponents, three are Class 5A and one is Class 4A. Their average margin of victory has been 19 points.
The team’s high-powered backcourt has been at the forefront. Gordon, Trench and Nicholas each average over 15 points per game, with Gordon leading the way at 23 per contest.
