LAPLACE – Kyle David Joekel, one of seven suspects who have been charged in the shooting deaths of two St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s deputies and the wounding of two others, was arraigned Monday on additional non-capital charges at the St. John Court House, according to reports.
He has been charged with three counts of attempted first degree murder in the shootings of St. John deputies Jason Triche, Anthony Bullock and Charles Wale on Aug. 16 in a LaPlace trailer park. In addition, Joekel has been charged with principal to the attempted first-degree murder of Deputy Michael Scott Boyington. He pleaded not guilty to that charge as well.
Joekel and co-defendant Brian Smith previously pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder in the deaths of deputies Brandon Nielsen and Jeremy Triche. Both died in the shootout with the suspects at the trailer park. Deputy Jason Triche was severely wounded. Deputies Bullock and Wale were present but were not injured, according to reports.
Another scheduling hearing has been set for Dec. 14.
Another defendant, Chanel Skains, has pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder.
Skains is the wife of defendant Terry Lyn Smith.
Skains’ bond was set at $100,000.
