Everything is in God’s hands

With politics in high gear and the presidential election only two weeks away, much of my time has been taken up looking at the national news and anxious to see what the polls are showing.

I’ve been saying that this election is the most important in my lifetime. Of course, I’ve said that about many previous elections (national, statewide and local) and realize that after the results, regardless of who wins, God is still in control.

As a Christian, my responsibility is to be active in the process and support the person who represents my views as a Christian.

Politics and athletics have always brought out the worst in me; however, I’ve made progress in developing a better attitude concerning athletics. I’ve learned to accept that a ballgame is just that – a ballgame. Since I’ve had that attitude change, I enjoy the games more and have found that many people who enjoy the game without getting worked up are really good to be around.

Politics is a different story. I really don’t enjoy people who have different opinions than mine. Let me confess that I know I’m wrong but continue to let my pride convince me that I don’t need to change in that area.

Well, I always say that God will send you what you need when you’re ready to accept it.

Last Friday at our 6:15 a.m. Bible sharing group, Frank Roth, my grandson-in-law, was the moderator. He started the meeting by referring to Luke 17:21, which speaks of the Pharisees questioning Jesus about the kingdom of God. Jesus replied, “… the kingdom of God is within you.”

Frank referred to the upcoming presidential election. He shared that he doesn’t like the person he becomes in the heat of political discussions. He then quickly added, “This meeting is not about politics, but about how we, as Christians, should react as we participate in the democratic process.”

The conclusion of the men in attendance was that we are in the world, but should not be of the world. We are called to be Christlike and should not focus on the world kingdom but on the kingdom of God.

I needed that meeting more than anyone else. I must be reminded daily of Luke 17:21. The kingdom of God is within me and I should act accordingly.
