EachWednesday, L’Observateur recognizes individuals and businesses in the River Parishes that have gone “above and beyond” in their efforts to make this a better place to live, work and play.

We believe an integral part of a community’s wellbeing is an attitude and arena where people who do good things who work to improve life for others … who try to make a difference are recognized and saluted. Because this is a salute to members of the community of the entire River Parishes, we solicit your recommendations for groups or individuals to be considered for inclusion.

This week we salute:

• High School students Tiffany Mitchell from St. Charles Catholic, Paige Bourgeois from Lutcher

High School and Randi Beltz from Hahnville High School, who each earned $1,000 scholarships from the River Parishes Hospital Auxiliary program. Winners of the annual scholarship are selected based on academic achievement, personal goals and aspirations for the future.

• Edgard native Terry Robiskie, who was recently inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame for his efforts on the football field at LSU and in the NFL. Robiskie was a standout quarterback at Second Ward High School in Edgard before moving on to LSU. He was drafted into the NFL by the Oakland Raiders and played five seasons in the league.

• St. Charles Sheriff’s

Office Capt. Kenneth DeCorte, who recently graduated from

the FBI National Academy. DeCorte, an assistant warden

at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Facility, was one

of 246 officers to complete the

10-week training course, which took place last month at the

FBI training facility in Virg-

inia.

• Fr. Martin Smullen, head pastor at St. Peter Catholic Church in Reserve, who recently celebrated his 30th anniversary as an ordained priest. During a recent special Mass, church parishioners presented Smullen with an engraved marble tile to mark the occasion.
