LAPLACE – Juniors and seniors at high schools in the River Region who are interested in pursuing a career that involves heavy emphasis on science or math are encouraged to apply now to an upcoming summer camp hosted by the River Parishes Community College.

The Sorrento-area school is hosting a free Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, or STEM, Camp later this month for incoming 11th and 12th graders in the region. The program is open to students in St. James, Ascension and Assumption Parishes.

“The week-long program allows participants to learn more about careers in fields that involve science, math, technology and engineering,” said RPCC faculty member Dr. Esperanza Zenon. “Participants will use computers and technology, participate in ‘STEM-related’ activities, learn about career pathways, meet professionals and take field trips to gain an understanding of and an interest in STEM careers, where employment is always in high demand.”

Zenon explained the camp will be held every morning from July 23 through July 27, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the River Parishes Community College campus, 7384 John Leblanc Blvd. in Sorrento.

Zenon said any student interested in the program must apply as soon as possible because the deadline is Friday. The camp application is available in the “INSIDE RPCC” section of the River Parishes Community College web site, www.rpcc.edu. She said the college will notify applicants of acceptance by Friday, July 13, and will hold a brief camp orientation for participants on Friday, July 20.
