Paper recognizes achievements, efforts

EachWednesday, L’Observateur recognizes individuals and businesses in the River Parishes that have gone “above and beyond” in their efforts to make this a better place to live, work and play.

We believe an integral part of a community’s wellbeing is an attitude and arena where people who do good things who work to improve life for others … who try to make a difference are recognized and saluted. Because this is a salute to members of the community of the entire River Parishes, we solicit your recommendations for groups or individuals to be considered for inclusion.

This week we salute:

• The staff at River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace, which recently participated in a free health fair for senior citizens at the Frank G. Lapeyrolerie and Leola Montz Senior Center in Reserve. The second annual health screening is part of a partnership between the hospital and the senior center.

• The Riverside Academy baseball team, which finished as the Class 2A runner-up in the state baseball playoffs in Ruston over the weekend. The Rebels lost a heartbreaker to Calvary Baptist in the championship game Saturday. We also salute the Hahnville High School baseball team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 5A tournament in New Orleans before falling to Archbishop Rummel High School. The Tigers entered the tournament on an 18-game win streak.

• Members of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office, who got up early Friday morning to participate in the Special Olympics Torch Run through the parish. The event is a fundraiser for local participants in the games.
