Honor all mothers every day

A few years ago, a Christian group of people who ministered in a state prison for men thought it was a good idea to offer Mother’s Day cards to any inmate who wanted one. The idea was a great success. In fact, they had to go out and buy more cards.

The group thought it only natural to do the same for Father’s Day. This time, they were prepared and had enough cards for everyone. What a shock! Only three cards were given away.

Mother’s Day was a special day when they remembered the love and compassion of their mothers. Sending a Mother’s Day card with a personal message was important to them.

Next Sunday we celebrate Mother’s Day. It is a day we set aside to honor all mothers who should be recognized every day of the year.

I believe, without reservation, that mothers have the most important job in these troubled times. What an awesome responsibility to be in charge of molding our children to be the God-fearing, loving, courteous, kind, honest and productive human beings we hope them to be! Their roles are often taken for granted. We, as fathers, are quick to take credit when our children succeed but rarely take the blame for their failures.

A few years ago, I heard someone say the greatest gift a father can give his children is to love their mother in front of them. I’m sorry to say that I learned too late. In spite of an insensitive husband, my wife did an excellent job raising our four children. For this I am forever grateful.

Please allow me to encourage the fathers to help their wives be the type of mothers they desire their children to have. There is no better day than this Mother’s Day to make a decision to be a godly example for your family.

My appeal to all fathers is to decide today to love your children’s mother in front of them. In fact, the Bible says that you should love her as God loves the church.

If my message on Mother’s Day seems directed to fathers, it is. I offer no apologies. As a father, I feel that without a doubt, if our children are to have the mothers we want them to have, a lot depends on us.

To all children, I say honor your mother on this special day. Make a commitment today to love, honor and respect her every day for the rest of her life.

To all mothers, I say, Happy Mother’s Day! Always remember that your children are God’s gift to you.
