METAIRIE — The Riverside girls track and field team will enter next week’s Class 2A regional on a high after it captured the District 10-2A championship on a rainy Monday at East Jefferson.

The Lady Rebels scored 136 to top all comers. McGehee finished as runner up with 94.

“I’m proud of our girls. They’ve done well all year and they had an excellent night across the board,” said RA track and field coach Joseph Trosclair. “I thought we really had a nice balance over what we did in the field and on the track.

“I thought we’d compete well in our district. We’ve got a shot at regionals and beyond, but we’ll have to have our best effort.”

The Rebel boys team took second place, behind champion John Curtis.

A number of Lady Rebs took individual district championship honors. Kaitlyn Masters finished first in the 200 with a time of 28.85. Channon Simmons was first in the 400 (1:05.03) and the high jump (4-08). Heather Cancienne recorded the top time in the 300 meter hurdles (52.69). Michelle Mayes won the discus (82-01.50) and Kori Bourgeois took district in the javelin (80-06).

Two Rebel relay teams also won district title honors. The 4×100 team (Rae Alexander, Taylor Terrio, Kennedy White and Shelby Deslatte) recorded a time of 52.98. The 4×200 team (Kaitlyn Masters, Terrio, White and Alexander) finished with a time of 1:53.14. The 4×400 team (Caitlin Becnel, Danielle Sharp, Heather Cancienne and Masters) took second place.

Mayes (second in javelin, third in shot put), Shelby Deslatte (third, triple jump), Caitlin Becnel (second, pole vault), Sarah Peytavin (third, pole vault), Toni Hebert (second, 100 hurdles), Jordan Duhon (third in 3200 and third in the 1600) Kaitlyn Masters (second, 400) and Simmons (second, 100) all earned additional top three placements for the Rebels.

On the boys side, a number of top three finishes were earned: Grady Geiger (second in javelin and third in triple jump); Wren Vicknair (second, discus); Donald Thomas (second in long jump, third in 200); Dominick Sparcella (second, pole vault); Ben Gaudet (third, pole vault); Devin Auddifred (second, 800); Brandon Millet (second, 400) and Jay Sanders (third, 100).

The 4×100 relay team (Thomas, Geiger, Gerald Songy and Sanders) finished second. The 4×200 team (Songy, Sanders, Thomas and Zelvin Smith) and the 4×400 team (Chad Turnbull, Songy, Xavier Ray and Smith) finished third.

“We don’t have the kind of numbers on the boys side that the girls do, but we had some guys that stood out,” said Trosclair. “We really don’t have enough guys right now, but the ones we do have did well.”
